How the fees are calculated

  • Pay-in fee = volume × rate + number of transactions × fixed fee. The number of transactions is volume divided by average ticket.
  • The payout fee is charged on the amount left after the pay-in fee.
  • A rolling reserve is not a cost: the provider holds part of your volume for a period (usually 90–180 days) and then releases it. That money is still out of your working capital meanwhile.
  • The effective rate is total fees divided by volume. That is the number to compare across providers, not just the headline pay-in percentage.

What else affects the cost

  • Fixed fee per transaction: with a small average ticket it can cost more than the percentage.
  • Currency conversion and the provider exchange rate are a hidden fee when payouts are in another currency.
  • Chargebacks and refunds: penalties for disputed payments and refund fees.
  • Monthly minimums, setup fees and account maintenance fees.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the effective rate?
It is the sum of all fees (percentage, fixed fee, payout) divided by volume. It shows the real cost of accepting payments and lets you compare providers with different pricing structures fairly.
Is the rolling reserve part of the fees?
No. The reserve is released after the agreed period, so the calculator shows it separately. You should still plan your working capital around it.
Why does the fixed fee matter so much?
With an average ticket of 5–10 currency units, a fixed fee of 0.3 adds 3–6% to the rate. For micropayments, pricing without a fixed fee is usually cheaper.
