High-risk merchant
A high-risk merchant is a business that banks and providers classify as elevated risk due to chargebacks, regulation or the niche's reputation.
High-risk typically covers gaming and iGaming, betting, forex and trading, crypto, dating, nutraceuticals, subscription services and sales with high refund rates. The reasons are frequent payment disputes, strict licensing or fraud risk.
Such merchants pay higher rates, are more often asked for a rolling reserve and face deeper KYB checks, and many banks will not work with them at all. On the other hand, some providers specialise in exactly these niches and know each market's requirements.
For high-risk, what matters most is a licence where one is required, a transparent business model and several payment partners so that one block does not stop payments.
