Settlement
Settlement is the transfer of funds for accepted payments to the merchant, minus fees, reserve and refunds.
There is a gap between the buyer paying and the money landing in the merchant's account. The provider collects payments, deducts fees and reserve, and pays out the rest on a schedule — daily, weekly or on request. Timing is written as T+1, T+3 and so on, where T is the payment day.
Settlement may be in local currency, in dollars or euros, and with some providers in stablecoins. When conversion is involved, know the provider's exchange rate: it is a hidden part of the cost.
For thin-margin businesses, settlement time matters as much as the rate: money sitting with the provider cannot go into stock or ads.
