MID (merchant ID)
A MID is the unique number under which the acquirer registers a merchant and processes its payments.
The Merchant ID is issued at onboarding and tied to the contract, MCC, currency and limits. Every transaction, chargeback and acquirer report is linked to this number.
One business may have several MIDs: for different websites, currencies or countries, or to spread volume. This keeps chargeback ratios healthy and avoids losing acceptance if one account is restricted.
With multiple MIDs, each one must match the real business: splitting volume just to dodge monitoring is treated by card schemes as a violation.
